The origins of the name "Ischia"

The name "Ischia" has ancient and fascinating roots. The Greeks called the island "Pithekoussai" (Πιθηκοῦσσαι), a term whose etymology is debated. According to some sources, it derives from "pithekos", which means "monkey", connecting to the myth of the Cercopi, inhabitants transformed by Zeus into monkeys.

Another interpretation suggests that the name derives from "pythos", or "amphora", in reference to the production of ceramics and wine amphorae on the island.

Subsequently, the Romans called it "Aenaria", perhaps linked to the metallurgical activities present on the island.

The current name, "Ischia", appears for the first time in 812 AD, in a letter from Pope Leo III to Charlemagne, where the island is called "Iscla maior". This term could derive from the Latin "insula", which later evolved into "Ischia".

A tourist destination

Today, Ischia is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in Italy, thanks to its thermal waters, enchanting beaches and breathtaking landscapes.

Monte Sant'Angelo and its curiosities

In ancient times, on the top of the mountain stood a small church dedicated to the Archangel Michael, from which the village takes its name.

The cult of St. Michael the Archangel, introduced by the Benedictines, has played a significant role in the religious history of the island

Furthermore, the mountain offers spectacular views of the sea and the entire island, representing an unmissable destination for nature and hiking lovers.
